What this layer is

The Dried Desert is the first layer that feels openly hostile. Caverns are wider, drops are taller and the floor is scattered with Turrets, Landmines, Stalactites and Waste Pipes. Groundwater is scarce; Oil is common, viscous and very easy to drown in when exhaustion sets in.

The layer does have rewards. Rose Pods provide a powerful Rose Light, Sandvines can be climbed like ropes, and the Recharging Station Vault can restore equipment. It lacks Container Crates, Medical Crates and Food Boxes, so arrive with supplies rather than expecting to resupply.

Hazards

  • Extreme heat and dehydration

Field notes

  1. Bring water. The layer is designed to punish players who relied on groundwater.
  2. Cross oil pools only with full stamina and a clear exit.
  3. Listen for turret arming sounds before entering a wide room.
  4. Grab a Rose Pod; the Rose Light detects infection and lights wide caverns.
Depth check: this layer ends at 900 m. The demo’s final layer is the Overgrown Depths at 1,500 m. The full game continues to 3,300 m.

Packing for the descent? Read the beginner guide, then check the injury system before you treat your first real wound.
