What this layer is

The Gravel Lands are the first 300 meters of the Gray Planet. The caves are small and interconnected, with groundwater pools, climbing ropes and holes in the background that let in enough light to navigate without a lamp. It is the safest layer in the game, but not a safe layer.

Shade Crawlers patrol the dark, Spike Traps hide on the floor and Geysers can launch you into a ceiling. The layer is also where you find Glowplants, Geotrees, Hydreeds and the materials for your first Foliage Bag and Canteen. Treat it as a workshop, not a corridor.

Hazards

  • Shade Crawlers in unlit caves
  • Spike Traps, Geysers and Jump Pads

Field notes

  1. Craft a Foliage Bag before exploring more than one screen from the life-pod.
  2. Turn the Emergency Light off in lit caverns to save battery.
  3. Throw a Glowplant Fruit down any shaft before descending.
  4. Do not fight every Shade Crawler; the layer rewards quiet movement.
Depth check: this layer ends at 300 m. The demo’s final layer is the Overgrown Depths at 1,500 m. The full game continues to 3,300 m.

Packing for the descent? Read the beginner guide, then check the injury system before you treat your first real wound.
